Mazda CX-70: Release Date, Price, Dimensions

The official Mazda CX-70 release date has been announced following Mazda’s reveal of the first-ever 2025 CX-70 two-row premium midsize SUV on January 30, 2024.

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 is the next installment in Mazda’s new large product group of premium midsize SUVs, alongside the three-row Mazda CX-90 that debuted for the 2024 model year.

The CX-70 rides on a new rear-wheel drive architecture and comes equipped with a Mazda inline six-cylinder engine mounted longitudinally within the engine bay. Like the CX-90, it also offers a plug-in hybrid or PHEV version.

Meet Mazda’s Premium Midsize Two-Row SUV

Now that the official Mazda CX-70 reveal has passed, Mazda has provided more details on this premium midsize two-row SUV. We now know the general CX-70 dimensions, engine performance, and where this new model fits within Mazda’s growing stable of SUVs and crossovers.

The first-ever Mazda CX-70 fills a void in the carmaker’s lineup that’s been there for some time. It will be the first Mazda midsize two-row SUV since the long-departed CX-7.

While this two-row midsize SUV will slot between Mazda’s CX-5 and CX-50 compact SUVs and the new three-row model, the CX-90, the CX-70’s dimensions have turned out larger than most imagined when this model was first announced.

Mazda CX-70 Dimensions: Large Five-Passenger SUV

The first-ever Mazda CX-70 debuts as Mazda’s premium five-passenger SUV within its new large product group, also consisting of the Mazda CX-90 three-row SUV. Contrary to original speculation, the CX-70 arrives riding on the same wheelbase as the three-row CX-90, even sharing that model’s overall dimensions.

Most were expecting the CX-70 to be similar to the shorter-wheelbase Mazda CX-60 sold in Japan, Europe, and elsewhere. Instead, Mazda has decided to essentially remove the third row of the CX-90 and rebadge it as the two-row CX-70.

So, if you’re familiar with the size of the three-row CX-90, you can already envision the Mazda CX-70 dimensions. This five-passenger SUV measures about 201 inches long, which is quite long for a midsize two-row model. The CX-70’s width also mimics the CX-90, at over 77 inches wide.

The 2025 Mazda CX-70’s height will largely depend on which wheels are fitted to it, but those wearing 21-inch alloys will stand about 62 inches tall.

By making the CX-70 two-row SUV longer than the brand’s previous three-row model – the 199.4-inch-long CX-9 – Mazda is betting there are plenty of premium SUV shoppers seeking a two-row model with extensive second-row legroom and a more generous cargo hold than the average midsize SUV.

Given the surprisingly substantial Mazda CX-70 dimensions, we can’t imagine this model cannibalizing sales of its smaller compact SUV siblings – the Mazda CX-5 and CX-50 – like perhaps a shorter CX-60-like SUV would have.

So, motorists seeking a more affordable two-row SUV and willing to sacrifice a bit of second-row legroom and cargo capacity will likely still opt for one of Mazda’s two compact SUV models over the significantly larger and more premium CX-70 midsize SUV.

Here’s a recap of the Mazda CX-70 seating capacity and dimensions:

  • Two-row, five-passenger midsize SUV
  • Length: 201 inches
  • Width: 77 inches
  • Height: 62 inches
  • Cargo space: Over 40 cubic feet
  • Maximum cargo capacity: Over 75 cubic feet

In place of the CX-90’s third row, the CX-70 boasts underfloor storage, increasing the SUV’s total usable space for cargo.

Premium Power: Mazda CX-70 Engine Options

If you’re familiar with the Mazda CX-90 three-row SUV’s powertrain choices, you know what lies beneath the hood of the new CX-70 two-row SUVs. As the Mazda CX-70 is part of the brand’s new large product group, it provides the same three powertrain options as its three-row sibling.

The Mazda CX-70 engine choices start with the automaker’s 3.3-liter inline-six engine platform. With its mild hybrid system and turbocharger, the Mazda CX-70 inline-six engine develops up to 340 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, the same as in the CX-90.

A Mazda CX-70 PHEV or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle model is also offered. The Mazda CX-70 plug-in hybrid utilizes the carmaker’s new hybrid powertrain setup that debuted in the European-market CX-60 before next arriving in the CX-90.

It features a version of Mazda’s venerable 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine mated to an electric motor and battery pack, delivering expected peak efficiency within the CX-70 model lineup.

The new Mazda CX-70 PHEV develops 323 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Those are the same figures as the CX-60 and CX-90, which utilize the same 17.8-kWh battery pack.

The smaller CX-60 PHEV provides a Mazda-estimated 39 miles of electric range, while the three-row CX-90 PHEV can travel up to 26 miles on battery power alone. So, expect the CX-70 plug-in hybrid to offer an all-electric range nearing 30 miles.

The limited full-electric driving range will be ideal for around-town motoring, and easy at-home and on-the-go public charging capabilities are also standard on the CX-70 PHEV model.

In total, the Mazda CX-70 specs offer three engine and power output options, each featuring i-Activ AWD and an eight-speed automatic transmission:

  • 280-horsepower 3.3-liter turbo mild hybrid
  • 340-horsepower high-output 3.3-liter turbo mild hybrid
  • 323-horsepower 2.5-liter plug-in hybrid (PHEV)

Like every other new Mazda SUV as of late, the automaker’s i-Activ AWD system comes standard on the CX-70.

We imagine the Mazda CX-70 inline-six model will be the volume seller within the lineup, as the CX-70 PHEV version will undoubtedly have a significantly higher starting MSRP, offsetting some of the gains in fuel efficiency.

The three Mazda CX-70 engine options generate similar power output, so all three will provide robust performance, with the high-output variant of the inline-six likely being the driving enthusiast’s choice.

Those seeking an electrified SUV with a limited electric driving range will opt for the high-tech PHEV powertrain that produces plenty of low-end torque.

It’s exciting to see these new Mazda performance-hybrid powertrains coming to the next generation of Mazda midsize SUVs. We can only hope to see the new turbocharged inline-six mild-hybrid setup make it to some of Mazda’s smaller and more agile cars in the future.

A performance-hybrid sports car or sports sedan, perhaps?

The Mazda CX-70 Release Date Arrives

After several delays, the Mazda CX-70 reveal finally arrived on January 30, 2024. This new two-row midsize SUV’s debut follows the CX-90 reveal by nearly a year to the day, as the three-row model debuted on January 31, 2023.

Mazda was deliberate by announcing the Mazda CX-70 without providing many details until its recent reveal. It didn’t want the two-row model overshadowing the CX-90 three-row SUV’s debut as the first in the line of next-generation Mazda premium large platform SUVs.

We can’t imagine the two-row CX-70 outshining the three-row model in any significant way, considering how things turned out with the CX-70 debuting as basically a CX-90 with a third-row delete.

For those who have waited nearly two years for the CX-70 release date, the reveal likely isn’t what you were expecting or hoping for. The production CX-70 is longer and less exciting than what most wanted.

This large two-row SUV fills a gap in the midsize SUV market, but we’ll have to see if buyers bite on this long-wheelbase CX-70 at dealer lots.

If you’re still wondering why the CX-70 shares the same wheelbase and length as its three-row stablemate, here’s why Mazda made the CX-70 a long two-row SUV.

After initially expecting the CX-70 in late 2023, Mazda has set the official Mazda CX-70 release date for Spring 2024, when it will be available at your local Mazda dealer.

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 trim levels and pricing are as follows:

  • CX-70 3.3 Turbo Preferred: $40,445
  • CX-70 3.3 Turbo Premium: $45,900
  • CX-70 3.3 Turbo Premium Plus: $48,900
  • CX-70 3.3 Turbo S Premium: $52,450
  • CX-70 PHEV Premium: $54,400
  • CX-70 3.3 Turbo S Premium Plus: $55,950
  • CX-70 PHEV Premium Plus: $57,450

For a closer look at each of these trim levels and its features, see our detailed Mazda CX-70 trims, colors, and pricing review.

Pricing is key to the success of the new CX-70. The SUV’s pricing structure is quite similar to that of the CX-90, so it will remain to be seen how popular the new two-row model becomes relative to the comparably priced and equipped three-row CX-90.

The CX-70’s starting price is still significantly higher than Mazda’s compact SUV twins — the Mazda CX-50 and CX-5 — which both start around $30K.

While the CX-70 will come at a premium price, it also offers premium features not found on Mazda compact SUVs: namely, inline-six power, the RWD platform, and a much larger cabin for cargo and passengers.

Mazda has mentioned that customers were confused or overwhelmed by the sheer number of trim levels for the three-row CX-90, so the Mazda CX-70 trim levels are fewer, split between the 3.3-liter inline-six turbo models and the CX-70 PHEV variant.
